Pharos Lighthouse - Ruins

Pharos Lighthouse - Ruins Ancient Places and/or Civilizations Geography World History Archeological Wonders

On the 8th of August, 1303, the great Pharos Lighthouse—in Alexandria, Egypt—was destroyed by a massive earthquake.

One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the great lighthouse at Alexandria had been damaged before, by earthquakes, but it had always managed to stay in tact.  Its massive stones tumbled into the Mediterranean, however, in 1303.

Those great stones are still underwater, giving us some idea of how huge the lighthouse actually was when it stood guard on Pharos Island.
