Even while he was alive, rumors swirled about Thomas Jefferson's relationship with Sally Hemmings.  It is believed that Sally was Mrs. Jefferson's half-sister (they reportedly had a mutual father).

This contemporary attack ad - depicting Jefferson as a rooster and Hemmings as a hen - targeted the Jefferson-Hemmings alleged relationship.  It was publicized during the presidential election of 1804 (when Jefferson was seeking a second term).

In his lifetime, Jefferson never publicly acknowledged whether he and Sally Hemmings were anything more than friends.
