Image of a portrait of Pope Clement VII, by Sebastiano del Piombo, circa 1531.

This was the Pope who refused to grant Henry VIII a divorce (from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon) so the King could marry Anne Boleyn.

When the Pope refused to give Henry what he wanted, the King declared himself head of a new church—the Church of England—and issued orders to close Britain's Catholic monasteries.
