President Lincoln and Cocaine

An excerpt from Treating Drug Problems - published by the Institute of Medicine - tells us an interesting story about Abraham Lincoln.

At the time he was a candidate for U.S. President, Lincoln - and everyone else who walked into a drug store - could purchase "cough candy laced with opium."

This fact is highlighted in an article included in Treating Drug Problems written by Ronald K. Siegel.  (See "Repeating Cycles of Cocaine Use and Abuse," at page 289.)
