One of the most-significant inventions of the 18th century was the Leyden Jar. For the first time, scientists who were generating electricity from electrostatic generators were able to store those electrical charges.

When electricity was stored, it could be studied. If electricity could be studied, scientists would be able to investigate its properties and determine answers to questions which had previously eluded them.

This image depicts an 18th-century engraving of Professor Pieter van Musschenbroek working in his lab. He is about to get a “shock,” to the amusement of his visitor.
