An Unlikely Hero: The Story of Raoul Wallenberg - REMEMBERING RAOUL WALLENBERG

Memorial 0 Member Stories Famous Historical Events Famous People History

Our world today owes a debt of gratitude to Raoul Wallenberg. In the years since World War II, much recognition has been given to him.

The United States granted him Honorary US Citizenship and also awarded him the Congressional Medal of Honor. Canada also awarded him Honorary Canadian Citizenship and January 17th (the last day Raoul was ever seen) is celebrated as “Raoul Wallenberg Day”.

Hungary also made him an Honorary Citizen and, in Budapest, there is a large memorial park which bears his name. Israel granted Honorary Citizenship to Wallenberg, one of the few Christians to receive this honor, and in Australia he is the country's first (and, to date, only) honorary citizen.

Monuments and statues of Raoul Wallenberg stand in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Peru, Russia, Sweden, England and the United States. Streets named in his honor can be found in Austria, Canada, Georgia, Germany and Israel.

At the United Nations, in New York City, there is a memorial located on Raoul Wallenberg Walk, which has been made from the original granite that previously formed the streets of Budapest’s Central Ghetto.

But perhaps the most simple, but moving, memorial to Raoul Wallenberg stands in the yard of the house where he was born in Sweden. It is a recreation, in bronze, of his worn and torn briefcase with his initials “R.W.”

It might be the most fitting memorial for an ordinary man who did extraordinary things.
