Robben Island Prisoners - Stone Pounders Crimes and Criminals Social Studies Tragedies and Triumphs

This image depicts Robben Island prisoners as they pounded piles of limestone into gravel.  Mandela, and his fellow political prisoners, also performed this task.

According to Nelson Mandela: A Life in Photographs (Hardcover) by David Elliot Cohen and John D. Battersby, this picture was taken in 1964 by a photographer working for the Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper.
