Robert S. Foster - Requested Clemency for Mary Surratt Visual Arts American History Famous Historical Events Social Studies Trials

Robert S. ("Sandy") Foster was born in Indiana and served as a respected Union General during the American Civil War. He played a key role in two pivotal events:  the siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign.

A member of the Military Commission trying the Lincoln conspiracy defendants, Foster signed a Clemency Request for Mary Surratt.
