Romantic Rejections

On the heels of his Leonore disappointment, Beethoven also struggled with his personal life.  Wishing to find a woman to love, and with whom he could share his life, he could not convince anyone to marry him.

He thought, perhaps, he might succeed with Countess Josephine Deym, a widow.  Although she loved being with him, adored his music and considered him a good friend, she couldn't imagine being with him permanently.

His brother Karl, meanwhile, found love ... with a woman Ludwig detested.

Extremely emotional about the turmoil in his personal life, Beethoven threw himself into composing music.  The Appassionata, his impressive piano sonata which contains one of his 5th-Symphony themes, was born about this time.
