Rome Declared a Republic in 1849

Giuseppe Mazzini, leading a revolutionary guerilla group into Rome, declares that Rome is now a Republic. This lithograph, published in 1861, recreates the events of February 9, 1849.

The backdrop of this "Proclamation of the Roman Republic" is the Piazza del Popolo, a public square near Rome's northern gate.
