Rufus Griswold

Rufus Griswold Visual Arts American History Poetry Social Studies Nineteenth Century Life

Rufus Griswold compiled poems by numerous American poets into various volumes of books.  Sometimes he included Poe; sometimes he did not.

After Poe's unexpected death, Griswold positioned himself to become the executor of Poe's literary estate.  He published an unflattering obituary of Poe and changed many of Poe's private letters when he published them for public review.

Griswold died, of tuberculosis, in 1857.  This portrait is of Griswold, as a young man, circa 1840.
