Quiet American, The - SCENES DURING FRENCH RULE

Vietnam has been a country touched by war or military occupation for a very long time. This illustration depicts an artistic impression of the French storming Son Tay on the 16th of December, 1883 (during the time that France was the dominant force in Vietnam). Historians are unclear who created this image—it may have been Pierre Méjanel (1837-1905).

What was Vietnam like during the time of French rule? How did the people live?

Thanks to an extraordinary collection of photographs on a French-language web site, we can take a trip back in time to see for ourselves.
