Sea Surface Temperature Graph - Hurricane Formation Geography STEM Tragedies and Triumphs Disasters

This graph, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), depicts worldwide sea-surface temperatures on a July day in 2009. 

Such data, from around the world, is compiled on a daily basis.  Weather forecasters and other individuals use it (among other tools) for predicting and planning purposes.

The key, below the image, explains the color-coded water temperatures (which are noted in Celsius).  When hurricanes form, they are birthed in areas where the water is the warmest.
