Vincent van Gogh knew that his mother was worried about him.  He painted this self-portrait for her, in September of 1889, while he was still a patient at St. Paul's Hospital in Saint-Rémy.

The original of this painting - which is believed to be Vincent's final self-portrait - was sold at a New York auction (in 1998) for $71,502,500.  The work was, at that time, part of a private collection.  The final bid was anonymous, via telephone.
