Sold into Slavery

Page from the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano (also known as "Gustavus Vassa, The African").

What happened when captured Africans were sold to buyers?  Equiano tells us that there was a signal - the beating of a drum - which let buyers know they could start selecting their "purchases."  In this manner, Equiano and other kidnapped people were sold.
