Soviet POWs at Buchenwald

Soviet POWs at Buchenwald Civil Rights Social Studies World War II Tragedies and Triumphs

This image depicts captured Soviet soldiers, interned at the Buchenwald concentration camp, rejoicing when they learn the war is over.  They are also hailing their country's leader, Joseph Stalin.

Stalin, however, considered that anyone captured by the Germans was a traitor to his own country.  When soldiers like these returned home, many were sent to forced labor camps throughout the GULAG Archipelago.
