Stench on a Slave Ship

Page from the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano (also known as "Gustavus Vassa, The African").

Captured Africans were placed below decks, Equiano tells us, so they could not see how the sailors operated the vessel.  Below deck, however, the stench was so bad it was "pestilential."
