Stormy Weather: June, 1944 - Illustration Famous Historical Events Geography World War II Tragedies and Triumphs

Image of a charcoal and wash illustration of the wreckage of the pontoon causeway created by artist Mitchell Jamieson.  The scene is from a destructive storm which occurred in the English Channel between June 19-20, 1944.

Had the Normandy invasion taken place during that time frame, the outcome would likely have been very different.  As it was, the "mulberry" artificial harbors - which the Allies constructed during the D-Day assault - were substantially damaged by the great storm.

This drawing depicts damage from the storm.
