This engraving, from 1855, shows what it was like for slaves to be treated as cargo aboard a crowded slave ship.  It has this caption:

Stowing the cargo of a slaver at night

The engraving is included in Life and Death on the Ocean:  A Collection of Extraordinary Adventures in the Form of Personal Narratives, by Henry Howe (Cincinnati, 1856).  The image is located facing page 537.
