Super Man - B-24 - Zamperini as Bombardier

Super Man - B-24 - Zamperini as Bombardier American History World War II Tragedies and Triumphs

Louis Zamperini and his crew mates wanted to fly a B-17, but they were given a B-24 instead.

On page 124, of Devil at My Heels, Louie tells us that their plane - which the men called Super Man - was a B-24F:

...The "Green Hornet" was borrowed; our regular plane was a B-24F model. [Note, however, that other references to "Super Man" indicate that it was a B-24D.]

In the picture at the top of this page, we see Lt. Russell Allen Phillips - whom everyone called "Phil" - in Super Man's cockpit.
