Vice President Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Buffalo after he was told about the shooting.  When it seemed that President McKinley would survive, TR left Buffalo.

Then ... when the effects of gangrene began to seriously threaten McKinley's life, Roosevelt returned to Buffalo.  He stayed at this home - owned by Ansley Wilcox - which is where he was sworn-in as America's 26th President on the 14th of September, 1901.
