Temporary Cemetery for the Fifth Marine Division

Temporary Cemetery for the Fifth Marine Division

The battle for Iwo Jima was hard-fought on both sides.  Thousands of men died.

This image depicts a temporary cemetery for men of the 5th Marines.  Mt. Suribachi is in the background.

Later, this same cemetery - marked by rows of white crosses - became the permanent resting place for more than 4,000 Marines who died in the fighting.
