Thatched Cottages by a Hill - July, 1890 Famous People Tragedies and Triumphs Visual Arts Nineteenth Century Life

On the 4th of June, 1890, Vincent van Gogh sent a letter to his sister Wilhelmina.  Among other things, he told her:

Here there are mossy thatched roofs which are superb, and which I am certainly going to do something with.

That same month, Vincent created "Thatched Cottages by a Hill," an oil-on-canvas work measuring 50.2 x 100.3 cm.  It is owned by the Tate Gallery in London.
