Wells' "invisible man" is called "Griffin."  A scientist, he has figured-out how to appear invisible to people around him.

Griffin remains a popular character in various forms of media, although copyright issues require him to have other names.  In The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the "invisible man" is called "Rodney Skinner."
