A great lighthouse was built in 290 B.C. on the Island of Pharos, near Alexandria, Egypt. It is known as the Lighthouse of Alexandria. It is also called one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

The lighthouse was used to help safely guide ships when traveling to the harbor named after Alexander the Great. Many of us, including historians, believe that this particular lighthouse was the first one in the world.

But from around 1303 to 1480, it was destroyed by a massive earthquake and then its remaining parts were used for other purposes. Alexandria’s famous landmark was 130 feet tall. It had many uses and was a magnificent sight!

It was August the 8th, 1303, when it happened. So if you have ever been to the landmark then you would know it has fallen down to bits and pieces, by an earthquake. Before that day the lighthouse was struck by other earthquakes and storms but it was still able to stay intact for years, even centuries!

There are still ruins from it to this day and some of it tumbled into the Mediterranean Sea. Other than being destroyed, it also was the first one in the world.

This “first” and famous lighthouse was built by Sostratus of Cnidus. It helped to guide ships safely at night and during storms. It was about 120 to 137 meters high.
