Student Stories on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - The Seven Wonders of the World: Temple of Artemis and The Hanging Gardens By: Loraine Waldron

The Temple of Artemis

The Seven Wonders of the World are ancient historic structures that have remained a part of our world and have influenced us still today. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the "Temple of Artemis" which was built in Ephesus, near modern day Selcuk in Turkey.

It is believed that the Temple of Artemis was rebuilt between 334 and 323 B.C. but was destroyed later by Goths in A.D 262 (final destruction in 401 A.D.). The structure was up to 60 feet high, and it was in honor of a non-hellenic goddess who later became identified as a Greek goddess.

The Temple of Artemis is one of many ancient structures that we have learned about, but yet there is not much information about the temple. It surely has done much in our history, and learning about it can help us now in our study of architecture and history of culture.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Another wonderful wonder is the "Hanging Gardens of Babylon," built near the ancient city of Ninevah (near the modern town of Mosul in Iraq). The building was built to please the queen, Amuhia. It was built by Nebuchadnezzar, around 600 B.C.

The height of the terraces reportedly rose from 75 to 300 feet. The layout of the structure—and the gardens—were laid out atop of a vaulted building, with provisions for raising water. As time goes by, experts try to piece-together the details of this ancient wonder.

As decades pass, some generations might never see the remains of these seven ancient wonders. They will be nowhere to be found.

History has affected the world today, and "The Seven Wonders of the World" have had a great impact on us.
