In an ironic twist of fate, William Logan Gwinn - an American postal clerk aboard Titanic - was only on the ship because he'd requested a transfer.
His wife, Florence, was very ill. Gwinn believed she was dying and wanted to be with her as quickly as possible. Titanic was the answer.
Instead, Gwinn died when Titanic sank, but Florence recovered from her illness.
