Unification of Italy

Italy's flag, known as il Tricolore, is the backdrop for a fragmented Italian peninsula. This is how the Italian Peninsula appeared, in the 19th century, before the country was unified.

The various boundaries represent various Italian states. Some of them were governed by local officials. Many were dominated by foreign powers (such as France and Austria).
