War Damage in a French Village

War Damage in a French Village Famous Historical Events Social Studies Visual Arts World War II Disasters

Moving inland from the Normandy beaches, soldiers pressed on.  Their goal was to reach, then liberate, Paris.

This artist's rendering, part of the U.S. Navy's art gallery, depicts soldiers who have reached the damage village of Verville-Sur-Mer.  Curators of the Navy’s art gallery describe it as follows:

Street in Verville-Sur-Mer, by Alexander P. Russo.

Eight days after D-Day, the desolated village is only a byway for a war that has passed through.
