Washington Post Political Cartoon on Women's Suffrage Civil Rights Visual Arts American History Law and Politics Social Studies

George Yost Coffin (1850-1896) created this political cartoon which references the “Apotheosis of George Washington,” a famous fresco created by Constantino Brumidi (1805-1880) at the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol Building. 

Coffin called his work:   “The apotheosis of suffrage.”  It was published in the Washington Post on January 26, 1896.
