What Happens When a Person Has Nothing More to Lose?

 

Knowing death was certain, because Ephialtes had betrayed the Greeks to Xerxes, Leonidas and his men fought so ferociously that their opponents (according to Herodotus) "fell in heaps." Put differently, we could say that because Leonidas was fighting a lost cause, he and his men were utterly ruthless in their fight against Xerxes.

If a person has nothing more to lose, does that tend to make him or her “pull out all the stops?” Why, or why not?
