Why Do We Keep Repeating the Same Mistakes?

Bill James, whose statistical methods helped Billy Beane to successfully pick a team of winning baseball players for the Oakland A’s, once said this: “When I started writing I thought if I proved X was a stupid thing to do that people would stop doing X.  I was wrong.”

What does that statement mean to you?

If our normal way of “doing things” often leads to mistakes, is it harder to change (to avoid repeating the same mistakes) or to follow a different path?  Explain your answer.
