Wisconsin Stories: The Great Peshtigo Fire

Wisconsin Stories: The Great Peshtigo Fire American History Social Studies Tragedies and Triumphs Nineteenth Century Life Disasters

Three years after the great fire at Peshtigo, Father Peter Pernin wrote an eyewitness account of the horrors he, and others, had experienced on the night of October 8-9, 1871.  His book was initially published in Montreal.

It is believed he wrote the account to help pay for the rebuilding of at least one of the destroyed churches for whom he was parish priest.

The State Historical Society of Wisconsin updated Father Pernin's book in 1971, as depicted in this photograph of the book's cover.
