The Story of Writing - Writing for Learning

Writing in science gives students an opportunity to describe observations and scientific phenomena, and can help understand new material by having to explain it in their own words.  Students can write the conclusions they draw from scientific investigations and experiments.  Students can document the evidence and data they collect using instruments and their five senses. Accuracy and precision are essential when writing in Science. Sharing and critiquing of written observations and explanations will help justify student claims.  Writing in science if effective communication how and what students learn.

Social Studies

In social studies, descriptive writing can help students describe an important historical figure or event more clearly. Writing rich in detail will create vivid depictions of people and places and help make history come alive. Student writing of historical content from various points of view will give a better understanding of events. Using different forms of writing such as letters, poems, speeches, will allow students to step into history and look at it as a real world experience.


Writing and mathematics are similar in that they both require gathering, organizing, and clarifying thoughts. Writing can assist math instruction by helping children make sense of mathematics and by helping teachers understand what children are learning. Some examples of writing in math include: Journaling what they have learned, describing solutions to problems, writing Math stories and poems (i.e. a trip to a restaurant- what they ordered, how much it cost and what tip they left).
