Charlestown, Scene of the Bunker Hill BattleHearing that the British were planning to fortify the high ground on Charlestown peninsula - thereby gaining an excellent view of the seaport and harbor at Boston - the Americans decided to get there first. On the 16th of June, 1775, the Patriots established defensive positions on Breed's Hill. (They had been instructed to fortify Bunker's Hill.) The next morning, the Redcoats were surprised to see the Americans were already dug-in. Click on the map for a better view. CreditsMap, U.S. National Park Service. |
