Petition of First Continental Congress to King George IIIStill trying to avoid war, the First Continental Congress (on October 25, 1774) agreed that the colonies would send a petition to George III. Written by John Dickinson, it asserts that Americans would be "recommending ourselves by every testimony of devotion to your Majesty and of veneration to the state from which we derive our origin," had it not been for the actions of Parliament. This is the first page of the petition. Click on it for a closer look. CreditsLibrary of Congress - John Bull and Uncle Sam: Four Centuries of British-American Relations - image vc44p1. |
