Thomas E. Edison - Aftermath of an EarthquakeThis historic film footage, taken by the Edison Film Company, depicts the state of ruin in San Francisco, following the April 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire. Although he is known for all types of inventions, Thomas A. Edison (who was born on February 11, 1847) is less well-known for the many films - of various disasters, among other things - which his company recorded. The following are examples, from those early days of moving pictures, when a new form of communication provided the public with a more in-depth way to learn about breaking news.
