Birdoswald - A Fort at Hadrian's Wall

When Rome occupied Britain, the country was part of a far-flung frontier which Roman legions could not easily protect.  Hadrian's Wall was built to keep-out invaders, especially from the north.

Roman forts were built at various sections of the wall.  One of the best-preserved areas is at Birdoswald, where evidence of Rome's occupation is still very visible.

Some scholars think that St. Patrick, whose father was a Roman official, was born in this area of Britain.
