Churchill - "We Must Arm"

On the 16th of October, 1938, Winston Churchill broadcast a speech urging both his country, and America, to arm themselves. 

Very critical of Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policy (toward Hitler's annexation of German-speaking Czechoslovakia), Churchill believed the way to avoid war was to be strong militarily.  When his warnings of a "gathering storm" seemed to fall on deaf ears, he took to the airwaves to make his case. 

Later, Churchill referred to the second world war as "the unnecessary war."  He had always believed that a firmer policy toward aggressor nations, following the first world war, would have prevented future conflicts.

By the time his predictions came true, however, it was too late to implement his recommended strategy.  The war which Churchill viewed as "unnecessary" had become a reality in Europe.
