Charras - Pictorial Model for Captain Nemo

Édouard Riou, a French painter, illustrated some of Verne's books.  It was he who patterned Captain Nemo on Lt. Col. Jean-Baptiste Charras.  We know this from something Verne said:

By the way, it was an excellent idea to use Colonel Charras as the model for Captain Nemo.  I should’ve thought of that.  (Charles-Noël Martin, quoting Verne, in La Vie et l’oeuvre de Jules Verne - Paris: Michel de l’Ormeraie, 1978 - at page 176.)

Who was Charras?

...an austere republican colonel who urged armed resistance to Louis-Napoleon's coup.
(The Republican Moment: Struggles for Democracy in Nineteenth-Century France, by Philip G. Nord, page 237.)
