Defending the Realm - Food RationsDuring World War I, Britain's Ministry of Food enforced the country's ration orders. Penalties were stiff. On 29 August 1918, for example, a violator received a three-month prison sentence for "unlawfully obtaining and using ration books." CreditsDefence of the Realm, U.K. Ministry of Food leaflet.
