Destruction of Statue - George III

American soldiers in New York City first heard the words of the Declaration of Independence on July 9, 1776.  That night, they tore down the statue of King George III which stood "at the foot of Broadway on the Bowling Green."  The horse's tail is now in the New York Historical Museum.

This image, by Andre Basset (Paris: Chez Basset, 177-), is (according to the Library of Congress), "a contemporaneous print representing the destruction of the statue."
