Distance at Which Pan Am Crew First Sees KLM 4805This drawing depicts the approximate distance (580 meters) which separated the two jumbo jets when the Pan Am crew first saw the approaching KLM plane. Given the speed of the accelerating 747, the two planes were approximately 8.5 seconds apart before either crew realized that extreme evasive action was immediately required.
