Statue of Liberty - Emma Lazarus

In an effort to help raise funds needed to build a pedestal for Liberty, Emma Lazarus wrote a poem about the statue in 1883.  Her most-famous words, which became well-known after her death, include these:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
