Red Army Routes Before Gustloff SinkingThe red arrows, pictured in this German map, indicate routes which the Red Army followed as their troops began to reconquer German-held territory. People with German backgrounds fled the advancing troops. Some of those individuals eventually boarded the Wilhelm Gustloff in an effort to escape capture by the Soviet army.
