William Lloyd Durkin - Saved Howard HughesMarine Sgt. William Lloyd Durkin happened to be in the neighborhood when Howard Hughes and his XF-11 crashed. Although Hughes was still badly injured (doctors gave him a 50-50 chance to survive), Durkin saved him from being burned alive. To thank him, Hughes ordered his staff to give Durkin a weekly paycheck for the rest of his life. |
