Major A.V.E. Johnston and the 39th Missouri

Major A.V.E. Johnston led the Union troops who chased "Bloody Bill" Anderson after the Centralia train massacre. 

He actually ended-up leading his men (about 155 relatively inexperienced troops from the 39th Missouri Infantry Volunteers) into another massacre.
