Purdah - Veil RequirementsThis image is from Afghaunistan, an 1848 work by Lieutenant James Rattray. The book, now maintained at the British Library, notes that Afghan women of higher classes strictly observed purdah, as did Muslim (and Hindu) women in Hindustan. Veils, as depicted in this illustration, were required to be worn outside the home.
