Trying to catch-up to the Soviets’ lead in space-and-rocket science, the American government created NASA (in 1958).  It would be years, however, before Dr. Wernher von Braun’s new rocket designs became a reality.  Meanwhile, America endured one humiliating rocket-launch failure after another.
