St. Paul by El Greco

This painting is El Greco's interpretation of Paul, a Jewish man born in Tarsus as a Roman citizen.  He was converted during a trip to Damascus and became a Christian missionary to the Gentiles (non-Jewish people) during the first century.  He was executed in Rome, circa 60-65 A.D.
